Sunday, May 25
2:00 pm
West End Commons

Join us at West End Commons, 641 St. Matthews Avenue (entrance on McGee St.) at 2:00 p.m. to see an award-winning documentary film by acclaimed Cuban filmmaker Estela Bravo. Operation Peter Pan: Flying Back to Cuba (2011) tells the story of the “airlift” of 14,000 Cuban children to Miami in 1961-1962, organized by the CIA in conjunction with the Catholic Church. The film traces the origins of the operation, shows the lives of the children in Miami without their parents, and follows some of them back to Cuba decades later as aging adults.

Also on the playbill will be the short From Gaza to Cuba (2024) about the life of one Palestinian medical student studying at the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) in Havana.

Historic Ukrainian Labour Temple – A Look Inside

Posted April 20th, 2025

Part of Doors Open – Celebrating the stories our buildings tell
Ukrainian Labour Temple and Doors Open
Saturday, May 24 & Sunday, May 25
Noon – 4:00 pm
Location: Ukrainian Labour Temple - 591 Pritchard Avenue

Built over one hundred years ago, largely by volunteer labour committed to art, culture, and community activism, our building played a role in the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike and is the only labour building that is still active to this day.
You may have driven by our historic building many times without realizing what treasurers await inside.

This year we are featuring our incredible interior that continues to amaze those seeing inside our building for the first time. From the detailed ornate features to our historic stage and balcony, everything has remained largely intact as built in 1919.

NOTE: Saturday's tours will be in conjunction with our "North End NEIGHBORS" Culture Fest.
