This book by Michael Petrou, an historian and foreign correspondent at Maclean’s magazine, tells the story of the almost 1,700 Canadians who defied Canadian law and volunteered to fight fascism in Spain between 1936 and 1939. Petrou draws on recently declassified documents from the archives of the Communist International, interviews with all surviving Canadian veterans, and visits to the Spanish battlefields and villages where they fought, lived and died. Many of the volunteers were from Manitoba, including more than 150 from Winnipeg. Renegades is published by University of British Columbia Press, in association with the Canadian War Museum. This event is part of the THIN AIR Signature Series collaboration between the Winnipeg International Writers Festival and McNally Robinson.
