Afshin Matlabi
Terrorism, Democracy, Leisure
January 23 - February 28, 2008

His current work is a multidisciplinary project on leisure. Through painting and drawings, digital imaging, print media, animation, photography, and performances, he creates an environment where the world of leisure meets terrorism and disasters.

Emory Douglas
All Power to the People
January 23 - February 28, 2008

” The community (was) the museum for our artwork. Some people saw art for the first time when they saw my posters. Some joined the party, some got inspired to make art too.”
-Emory Douglas, Minister of Culture, Black Panther Party

All Power to the People! features Black Panther Party posters and newspaper graphics produced in the 1960s and 1970s. The exhibition highlights the artistry of Emory Douglas, and documents the Panthers’ involvement with a broad array of causes, including opposition to the Viet Nam War and solidarity with the United Farm Workers movement. With documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), All Power to the People! also illustrates efforts of the United States government to destroy the Panthers as part of wide-spread efforts to stifle oppositional political movements. The social programs of the Panthers and the powerful images of armed party members had a strong impact on the public consciousness of the time, and their efforts to combat the oppression of racism and poverty still resonate today.

It is a joint project of the MayWorks Festivals in the three cities and is made possible by funding from the Canada Council. It features some of the best young poets from these cities who will be doing work commissioned especially for the show. Here in Winnipeg we are pleased to announce that the University of Winnipeg Students Association and CKUW are also sponsoring the event.

As a pre-MayWorks event on April 4th and 5th the Almanac Festival was held at the West End Cultural Centre. It featured Tom Paxton, Lindsay Jane, Nancy White, Joe Jencks (with Helena Nash). Scenes from the Class Struggle: two films by Ken Loach

Raining Stones 7:00 p.m. (1993) (90 min)
One of the movie’s characters observes: “When you’re a worker it rains stones seven days a week.” This sets the scene for Ken Loach to explore one man’s struggle with his poverty in the wider context of the problems created by the “new” British economy.

Riff Raff 9:00 p.m. (1991) (96 min)
Riff Raff is a gritty and realistic portrayal of workers dealing with the consequences of the Thatcherite revolution. It follows a group of construction workers as they convert an old hospital into luxury flats (the triumph of neo-liberalism?) depicting their struggle against low pay and dangerous working conditions with no union to fight for them.

The Park Theatre, 698 Osborne St
